What is a beautiful smile? Can it be identified using the same standards used to define human beauty in general? Recent studies suggest that certain universal standards, shared by all cultures, allow us to define "beauty". One of the standards is the rule of symmetry – the more symmetrical a face, the more we describe it as "beautiful". In fact, the rule of symmetry also applies to smiles. Yet surveys indicate approximately 50% of us are unhappy with the appearance of our smiles.
Why would someone want to improve their smile? In some cases the reasons may be practical, such as improving career opportunities (model, actor, business professional) or in preparation for special events (wedding, divorce). The motivation may also be more personal, such as wanting to improve attractiveness or developing a more youthful appearance.
Regardless of the motivation, the net result is often an improvement in self-confidence and self-esteem. For some an enhanced smile can literally transform their lives – such is the impact of a beautiful smile! |
